UBCO students and alumni showcase work in public spaces through partnership with the City of Kelowna.

A partnership between the City of Kelowna and UBCO’s Faculty of Creative & Critical Studies has resulted in the installation of 13 original street banners on the Rotary Centre for the Arts Commons and the Art Walk.

These banners, created by UBCO students and alumni, will be on display for the public throughout the remainder of the year.

Since its inception in 2020, the Outdoor Banner Exhibition program has featured the work of 65 students, faculty, and alumni, providing a platform for emerging artists.

Christine McWillis, Cultural Services Manager for the City of Kelowna, expressed pride in the partnership, stating that these banners add vibrancy to the community while celebrating local talent.

Shawn Serfas, Head of the Department of Creative Studies at UBCO, emphasized the importance of showcasing student and alumni work in public spaces to support and help them grow as artists.

In addition to the traditional art, two larger banners utilize augmented reality to display animations over the printed images, created by visual arts professor Myron Campbell and media studies students Owen Clark and Jessica Williams.

These augmented works combine sound, drawing, painting, and digital tools to produce fascinating animated pieces, said Campbell, excited for the public to engage with the art.
