Infrastructure upgrades prompt advice for safe commutes amid ongoing construction.

As the school season approaches, residents are reminded to plan ahead, stay alert, and respect construction zones during their daily commutes.

“Construction is essential to Kelowna’s growth,” said Mac Logan, General Manager of Infrastructure. “This year, the City is investing more than $150 million to improve and maintain public infrastructure, including transportation, parks, and utilities. Some disruption is unfortunately inevitable, and we appreciate everyone’s patience and apologize for any inconvenience as we work to complete various projects.”

Commuters should be aware of the construction zones that may impact their school pick-up and drop-off routines. Planning a route and following construction signage helps keep everyone safe. Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians are encouraged to stay alert and follow posted signs near construction areas, for their safety and for the safety of crews working on site.

Although the City works to avoid major road closures during the school year, some projects will result in travel delays. One such project is the Frost Road extension and Chute Lake Road roundabout, which requires a temporary closure of Chute Lake Road between Barnaby Road and South Crest Drive for approximately two months.

Once complete, the project will offer expanded transportation options, improved access and safety, reduced congestion on nearby streets, and upgraded sidewalks and bike lanes. Due to noise impacts on nearby homes, overnight work isn’t feasible. A full road closure allows crews to finish the work about five weeks sooner than if the road remained open.

Construction is a temporary inconvenience that brings employment and long-term improvements to our community.
