City invests significantly more than last year in 133 capital projects

Kelowna is laying the groundwork for the future with 133 capital projects either underway or completed, investing over 50 percent more than last year in infrastructure aimed at enhancing quality of life, strengthening community bonds, and supporting long-term sustainability.

“We’re proud to contribute to a diverse range of projects in Kelowna that will support community growth and vibrancy,” said the Honourable Stephen Fuhr, Secretary of State (Defence Procurement) and Member of Parliament for Kelowna. “Improving essential infrastructure, such as water and wastewater treatment, highways and roads, along with firefighting services, builds more sustainable and safer places to live.”

The projects range from new parks and road upgrades to essential utilities and environmental restoration, transforming how residents move, play, and live. Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs Ravi Kahlon emphasized the importance of these investments in providing service access and promoting community connectivity.

Key transportation improvements include upgrades to transit infrastructure, active transportation routes and shared mobility options. Notable projects are the Glenmore Road widening, the Frost Road extension and roundabout, and the Kane and Valley Road roundabout.

Utilities improvements are underway across various areas to upgrade water, sewer, and stormwater systems, ensuring reliable service and future preparation. The Summit Reservoir expansion, completed in mid-June, increased potable water storage and firefighting capacity for the Dilworth Mountain neighborhood.

Various funding sources support these projects, including Development Cost Charges collected from new development, Federal and Provincial contributions, taxation, and other means.

Mayor Tom Dyas expressed excitement over the multitude of projects coming to fruition, enhancing public spaces and services. The Canada Community Building Fund remains a key annual funding source for these infrastructure endeavors.
