The new mass timber roof structure marks progress in the Airport Terminal Building expansion at Kelowna International Airport.

The Kelowna International Airport (YLW) is marking a pivotal moment in the expansion of its Airport Terminal Building with the completion of a new mass timber roof structure.

This innovative architecture reflects YLW’s dedication to sustainability and community, showcasing local character through its design.

The project was supported by a $500,000 grant from the Province’s Mass Timber Demonstration Program, which seeks to solidify British Columbia’s leadership in wood design and engineering.

An integral part of the terminal’s expansion is its incorporation of locally sourced mass timber, linking the design to the region’s natural beauty and heritage.

The structural concept, a modern twist on a traditional waffle-slab design, was realized with panels manufactured by Kalesnikoff in Castlegar, B.C.

Advanced technology, including digital construction modeling, facilitated the precision prefabrication of panels.

The use of mass timber has not only supported B.C.’s forestry economy but also generated over 350 jobs.

Slocan Valley’s contribution of 788 cubic meters of wood underscores the local economic impact.

Scheduled for completion in 2026, the expansion is poised to enhance the traveler experience while emphasizing sustainability.

Minister Ravi Parmar hailed the terminal as a showcase of local craftsmanship, encouraging visits to the striking new structure.

Kelowna Mayor Tom Dyas celebrated the project’s progress, highlighting its alignment with regional values of sustainability and innovation.

Sam Samaddar, CEO of YLW, noted the airport’s mission to mirror community values, with mass timber being a crucial element in achieving this.

Architect Rob Grant stressed the project’s goal of creating a memorable gateway to the region, spotlighting low-carbon construction benefits.
