City aligns rental rules with Provincial standards, resumes license applications

On Monday, the City Council adopted updates to local short-term rental regulations to align with Provincial standards, allowing for the resumption of business license applications for such rentals.

The City of Kelowna, after a thorough review supported by a strong long-term rental vacancy rate, aims to protect long-term rental availability, enhance enforcement, and reduce confusion for both residents and visitors through updated regulations.

The new regulations are consistent with Provincial legislation, permitting short-term rentals in an operator’s principal residence for periods of less than 90 days. Importantly, Kelowna has now allowed such rentals in secondary suites or carriage houses for the first time.

Operators seeking to manage a short-term rental must obtain a business licence and must also register their rental with the Province to avoid penalties. Online applications are recommended for faster processing.

These updates aim to balance community needs, support the local economy, and provide clarity on the operation of short-term rentals. Licensing will promote proactive compliance and ensure short-term accommodations are good neighbors and fair among providers.
